When Ingrid and Jan contacted me to ask if I’d come to their farm for a family photo shoot to capture their woodland adventure, I was intrigued and just a little bit excited!
Family lifestyle photography always works best when the family is ‘doing something’, and so I had a really good feeling that I was going to create some lovely images on this sunny Autumn afternoon.
As I bumped my way along the winding track, I caught a glimpse of a stag through the trees. He stood transfixed for a few seconds, and then was gone. Just when I was beginning to think I’d taken a wrong turn I rounded the brow of the hill and there was the farmhouse, just as Ingrid had described it.
The girls were excited to be going on a little adventure and wasted no time in introducing themselves. I always take a little time to get to know the families I am about to photograph as I feel this helps boost everyone’s confidence which ultimately shows through in the final images.
So we set off across the fields and entered the deep dark woods!
We made our way down the hillside to a clearing near the river. We searched around for dry sticks to help get the fire under way, and once the flames began to take hold, we warmed ourselves with mugs hot chocolate. Then it was time to toast marsh mellows over the burning embers. There was time to explore the winding river before making our way back though the woods where there was just enough late afternoon light for a few ‘formal’ portraits of the whole family in the last rays of the Autumn sun.
Here’s what Ingrid and Jan had to say about their family photography session:
“John spent a whole Sunday with us in our little forest patch, taking pictures of our two little daughters. He was an absolute pleasure to have around – easy going with the children and completely a part of our day out – and not “getting in the way” at the same time. We were very happy with the end result as well – in short we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend John”
